I wrote Solid Ground when I knew my (now) wife and I were in it for the long-haul. We were stretching the waning end of our young adult days, and we knew we were going into a big transition period in our lives. There were lots of questions around what we wanted our future to look like and how we were going to map that out.

We’re both transplants to the DC-area, and one of those questions was – where are going to be? Do we stay here or relocate? That’s a little bit of the meaning behind the line “And now we’re tourists in our own hometown. Faceless, wandering these streets.” The places we used to call “home” have undergone so much change the length of time we’ve been gone. And with an eye on the future, what place we going to call “home” from here on out?

A lot of time has passed since I initially wrote the song. We’re living out some of that future now. Our days of globe-trotting are on hold for now. We’ve traded in nights filled with rock ‘n’ roll and craft beers for cartoons and bottles of formula. But our house is filled with more laughter than there’s ever been.

There’s of course still plenty ahead of us to sort out. But things looks vastly different than they did a decade ago. That’s what I tried to capture in the lyrics for this song, and in the story in this video.
